Incorporating the Struggle

Elevator Painting by Cody Hudson

Monster Children Logo Work by Struggle, Inc.

Chicago-based Cody Hudson and his studio, Struggle Inc., have been long time, personal favorites of the group here at SMx2. Cody’s use of minimalist, freeform doodles and basic patterned elements is inspiring-primarily because of how these simple elements are composed to create works with a wonderful visual density.

Aside from an impressive body of work for clients like Nike SB, Burton and Volkswagen, Struggle’s Cody Hudson also works with a variety of artists on public art installation-some commissioned, some not;) These street art pieces are a combination of found materials, paint and collage style assembly, which then receive a kamikaze-style assembly process around various Chicago neighborhoods.

For a bit more information on Cody and Struggle Inc.’s work you can read this great interview on Post, or check out the video segment on his studio and work on the Upper Playground DVD, The Run Up.

Von Glitschka Design and Logo Work for New Modern

I was first introduced to the work of Von Glitschka when I became a regular listener of the Freelance Switch monthly podcast, Freelance Radio. Von was part of a panel of four that convened on a monthly basis to discuss common issues that affect the life of freelance designers, illustrators, writers and creatives at large.

As with most podcasts I listen to, I rushed out to the interbew (read interweb) and looked up each of the panel member’s sites to see what type of work they did.  The diversity of Von and his firm, Glitschka Studios, struck me immediately. Their work employs a wonderful mix of hand-drawn elements and crisp, modern design. Located in the Pacific Northwest, Glitschka Studios has a strong client base and an even stronger design and publishing sense. Von’s personal site adds to the diversity and breadth of his scope through an assortment of great tutorials and other design-related projects.
